Has Anyone Been Able To Get ABA At School For Their Child?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

The doctor has prescribed ABA for Laurel to occur at school through a provider, but the school system is trying to block the provider from providing therapy in the school setting. IEP meeting is scheduled for Dec 6th. Suggestions?

Most parents I know who have successfully gotten ABA in school have done so by threatening or actually suing the district and the district them provides their own BCBAs and staff. Some districts claim that their "day schools" (special education schools) 'do ABA' some do some don't. I personally think most people (professional and lay people) don't understand "ABA" and what most people are thinking/talking about is "discrete trial training" which is ONE part/method of ABA, which actually has some recent research against it (increasing OCD type behaviors, rigidity and anxiety in some young children)... I think it is best to have deep discussions about what the school IS offering, how are their programs structured? How/when/what are their teachers and staff trained in? Conducting Functional Behavior Assessments for both desired and non-desired/problem behaviors on an ongoing basis. Using Behavioral Analytic assessments/curriculum such as VB-MAPP or Essentials for Living (NOT AbLLS) for monitoring can go a far way. Most families I know get prescribed ABA for afterschool/weekends, that is if they use private ABA at all. Other methods schools may use that do have research behind them include ABA principals, Early Start Denver Model, video modeling, Picture Exchange Communicatio System (for non and low verbal students).... Some schools also incorporate TEACCH (though this is not a research based educational model), RDI and/or DIR-floortime. Direct Instruction is often used in schools even in general education classroom and has been proven effective for ALL learners. Keep an open mind and ask for details!

mostly schools don't allow, so ask for early dismissal in school for those days

School districts in Colorado are using the STAR program that is ABA-based. It took some discussion before we got our school to introduce it

Are you in Gaston County Schools? I know a counselor who has navigated the process. She can go to the meeting with you and help. Christina Licata (Phone number can only be seen by the question and answer creators)
