Holding Salvia In Mouth
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son has this new habit of holding salvia in his mouth for periods of time! I was wondering have anyone else experienced this situation? And if so what did you do to resolve the situation?

Of course I know that he's holding the salvia because the swishing and bc his cheeks are bigger than norm (lol)! Sometimes I will push his cheeks in to force him to swallow but now he want even budge! We currently having OT now for over a year and in the process of scheduling an feeding evaluation! We don't have an z vibe but have used one in the past with OT. Ahmir however does have a chewy tube and loves his vibrating tooth brush (the only way to get him to brush)!

Hi, my son holds his saliva because he has contamination fears. He thinks if he swallows his saliva something bad will happen to him. He has been on OCD/Anxiety meds for over 7 months with no improvement. I am hoping that seeing an in-home therapist for ABA treatment will help alleviate this compulsion.

Can you help me to understand how you could tell he is holding it in his mouth? Mine was swishing it around in his mouth sometimes so I could hear that noise. Is that what you mean? The biggest issue we have is the saliva that randomly falls out of his mouth. I think my son has hypo-sensory issues especially with his mouth. It's like he is not able to completely feel what's going on in there. We started Occupational therapy (OT) for "sensory" and "feeding" for one hour a week. We are trying to increase it to two. We also got a Z vibe tool which the OT therapist uses. He was playing around with it this week (using it like a Harry Potter wand) and went into a room and then came out with no Z vibe in his hand. So it's technically lost right now. Don't let it out of your site if you get one because it's $35!
