Has Horse Therapy Helped Anyone's Nonverbal Child Be More Verbal?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone done the whole Hippo therapy/equestrian therapy before? Just wondering if it could actually help.

Hi, Hippotherapy - ie. SLP, OT +/- PT working with a child during horse back riding is very very expensive. about $ 250/- for 45 minutes or so. Also, waitlists run into years at most well known places in southern CA.
However we started horse riding for my 3.5 year old son in Mar. That has turned out to be a great therapy for him.
His receptive language has improved. Focus and referencing has shown 25% improvement compared to what it was. (after 8-10 sessions). I'm excited to see what more coming our way! glory to god.

Horse riding is a highly sensory activity. As horse is a live animal who's continuously moving on a trail, the child has to align his position for maintaining the balance. This activity demands attention, core as well as leg muscle engagement to a huge extent. Kids with any sort of balance issue need to be supported by 1/2 persons on the side. However, if the child is physically normal, he's fastened with belt around his waist, so no chance of falling/ tripping.
Some of the experienced owners of riding centers have told me that it takes about 8-10 classes to understand if the riding is benefiting the child. One other aspect, we can't force the child to ride the horse if he doesn't fancy it. It can't be forced upon the child. If it works, great. Otherwise find something else.
