Holmdel/Middletown ASD Services In School-any Advice?
We are planing a move to Middletown or Holmdel (most likely Holmdel) and I'm trying to get ANY advice I can regarding the schools and related services. My son has mild (after doing over 30hrs/wk for past year) ASD and will be 3 in the fall. He has no cognitive delay and is very social but has apraxia/speech delay.
Any advice anyone can give regarding these towns would be great!!!
Well - There are some good specialized out of district schools such as Eden in Princeton and the Children's Center of Monmouth County in Neptune. They will take a strong ABA based approach. Many public schools have in-district programs - you would want to know if they have a pre-school handicapped program and confirm that they have summer program available. Get your letters of diagnosis ready and most importantly, don't sugar coat and make your kid sound like a delight when talking to the school - if you have an extreme need for extra services you have to make a supporting case. Don't spin to the positive which is normal human nature.
If your child is mild - and on a trajectory towards reasonable habilitation, the public schools may be a good choice, but if you are unsure, or the issues are more pronounced, the specialized schools are probably the better path. Children's Center - as I recall - had the goal of getting kids back into district if possible - though our son eventually regressed and had to come back to a specialized program.
