Florida Schools

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Memphis, TN

I am thinking of taking a job and moving to St. Augustine FL and have a child with high functioning aspergers. I need to know about the schools in that area. Do they work with children with IEPs? Are they accommodating? If not I will not take the job because right now he is in a school that is so awesome with him and I do not want to move him if I do not have to.

I actually got more responses from people about this on www.city-data.com. I went to the Jacksonville forum and asked about the schools. I received a lot of information about the schools that I needed.

Hi,
I am also looking for a good high school program for my ASD son. We are moving to St Johns county next month. Any advise which high school in this county has the best support for a high functioning teen?
Thanks for any advise.

All fl school system is pretty much the same cut budgets and lack of autism classes. They want to mainstream all the children that is a fl thing right now. No matter where on fl. All the services are lacking.

Thank you for letting me know. I was hoping to get answers on this from parents that have their kids in St. Jonh's county schools now. I know that the elementary school my son went to here was great for the first 2 years until a new principle came in. Then she was horrible, always questioning my son's diagnoses and telling me it was all behavior issues. Things are so much better now he is in middle school and I would hate to lose that support. They are so great with him. So, I know that things can change with the different administrators that are in charge. I may just be holding out hope and have to give up the job though. It is not worth his peace of mind if I will not get the help I need from those schools.

I left Florida a few years ago because the services are not good. The school systems do not have specialized ASD classrooms so to speak. They like to mainstream and then put different classifications of disabled children together on other classes. Most of the teachers have special needs training but not autusm specific. Things may have changed a little since 2011 when I was there but I don't think it has changed much.

Medicaid is an issue to because that wasn't good either. Then you have to consider medical care and that is way behind. We had to travel 3 hrs for a good doctor. You may be ok if your child is on the higher end of the spectrum but I would still question this.

My daughter is on the lower end and we had a chief of psychiatry tell us to move north because they were 10-20 years behind fir the most part.

The sun and weather are nice but that is about it.
