Aggression Towards Me
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

I know I'm not alone in this, so have to ask
My son had not hit me during his aggression since right before and right after his diagnosis in October and November 2015
Then Friday night out of nowhere really can't pin point a trigger he was aggressive punch fridge then pillows and I see this look and he kept stepping towards me and then "boom now it's me"!
He was at my chin in 2015 even then couldn't restrain him he ended up on 3 hold total Sept to November 2015.
Now this time isn't first… read more

You are not alone. My son was aggressive towards me Feb 2016. I called the cops 4 times. He wasn't on any medication at the time. Just like you said it was a combination of puberty and Autism. I was so scared because I had never seen my son be so violent before. One good thing is that when the police arrived my son would just sit there quietly he was so scared my heart was broken into pieces knowing that I had to call the police on my son. I had no other choice. My son is much better now the meltdowns are less frequent. All the best to you.

If you have a violent kid (my son's started at age 9), then you need to immediately start addressing it and teaching alternative behavior. It's super hard to teach so work with your autism consultant to teach self-calming stress management exercises. Recognize his triggers. Learn to deescalate him. Get in-home supports to help teach him these skills.

Later because we couldn't fully get rid of the violence, I decided I needed to put safety measures in place for myself and staff. I went to a shop that installed the police dividers in cop cars and had one installed in our car so if my son has a bad behavior when we are out, we have a place to contain him. I also called a local martial arts group, described exactly how I get attacked, and was trained on self-defense for exactly those types of attacks (this really increased my confidence and it works). I installed a solid core door on my bedroom with locks and reinforcement so I can get away if he attacks me.

Today we have a violent incident about once every 6 weeks (used to be 30 per day). And I see my son self-calm himself often. It was a ton of work and I'm very proud of him. I hope some day it will be zero.

@A MyAutismTeam Member yes we have a great one, it is unpredictable come to find out the source of some this agitation was one of the two one on one aides at school. Monday was a disaster that aid there he was also there Friday night that was hell for me. Other aide Tuesday Thursday guy he had zero episodes.
It is a combination meds, side affects:possible, triggers and feelings. Not having the words and aggression comes.
Scary it is when so unpredictable.
Actually psychiatrists is all I had for some time and the one I went to in private practice is both pharmacologist. He trains residents at Harborucla and he trained at John Hopskins. It seems puberty changes ... just when you think it's all level and working! Boom πŸ’₯ not so fast curve ball.
Thank you for reply and info~ hugs πŸ€—

Aggression Towards Me--Hi . As much as we do not like to medicate, at times it is the only thing that WILL help...no cure, but may lessen these episodes. thhis journey is all about getting the right diagnosis, finding the right doctor or doctors, finding the right school, finding the right medication or the right combination of medication. Have you thought about seeing a psychiatrist who is also a pharmacologist-a child psychiatrist who specializes in behavior modification through observation, guidance, and medication? They are psychopharmacologists and are the ones to see to make sure your son gets the right everything. don't be afraid of the word psychiatrist--everyone right away associates that with being "crazy" which, thank goodness and hopefully has been removed form our speech.
These drs are experts in the right combinations and the right dosages as well as observing the behavior and helping you to implement ways to redirect, thereby showing him a different path. wish you and your son all the best--and prayers.
