I'm looking into getting my 6 year old son ABA therapy. I've heard a few bad things about it, like people comparing it to dog training. What are some of the pros and cons? What sorts of things does ABA help strengthen? Have some of you had great success with it or did it end up being something that didn't work for your child?

Members shared overwhelmingly positive experiences with ABA therapy for their children with autism, emphasizing that modern ABA is child-led, play-based, and individualized rather than the rigid approach of the past. Several members described significant progress in areas like potty training, accepting new foods, overcoming sensory fears, social skills, and attention span, with one member noting their daughter now runs excitedly into every session. A recurring theme was the importance of visiting multiple providers to ask about their approach, ensure no aversive techniques are used, and find a good fit, with many encouraging the original poster to give it a try while staying involved in the process.

We love ABA for our son...(4 years old). The group we use is phenomenal, the work on everything. They are basically a child led group. I am not to far from your area. If you want to check out aba I can give you their name. (They are out of Winston-Salem) good luck!

Hi @A MyAutismTeam Member, sorry for taking so long to respond to you. My son is more on the classically autistic side. Whenever we have any therapies for him, that are outside of school, my husband and I make sure that one of us are present to gain as much info as we can so that we can work with him as well. I've never heard of the treatments you mentioned. I may have to do some research on them.
