We’re looking at a Montessori pre-school for our son. The woman who runs it has a grown child with autism and says she feels their teaching method works well for children on the spectrum. Anyone have any experience with this who can give me some insight?
From a montessori website: Montessori is a method of education that is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborative play. In Montessori classrooms children make creative choices in their learning, while the classroom and the teacher offer age-appropriate activities to guide the process.
@A MyAutismTeam Member So this is kind of second hand knowledge. And may not be of any help.
My nieces (neurotypical kids) go to a Montessori program/preschool. And while I may not agree with some of the things Montessori teaches, I can't deny that my nieces aren't some smart independent kids! I can't say for certain that the teachings would be better for an kid with Autism, I have seen some wonderful things with my nieces. Very independent, which my son craves, but lacks the knowledge of. He still needs us for a lot of things, which could be the Autism or the lack of teaching him to be independent.
