Clothes Changing / Ritual Of Running Water On Clothes
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

My daughter (non verbal) likes to change clothes a lot. I have learned to accept that. Normally that is not too big of a deal, especially if it calms her down. There is a ritual that I would like to stop / block, however. Every day she will set some things out and set them on her bed by her pillow -things that she (supposedly) wants to wear to bed that night. She will often wear those things after taking her bath in the evening. Usually at least one of these things is not PJs, but a shirt for… read more

@A MyAutismTeam Member and @A MyAutismTeam Member My daughter who is 27 started wetting towels overnight and her compression leggings as well. So I took away all of her clothes and towels, hand towels and wash clothes. She gets a set of clothes and towels everday for a week or two to reset her brain. Then I give them back to see if the wetting her clothes and towels has stopped. We go back and forth with wetting issue, but as time goes on it seems to diminish the issue of wetting clothing and towels.

I think doing the picture thing is the best solution just take a picture of her doing it and print it out. Then draw a res line threw it. I have been told ASD children respond a lot better with pictures of them selves.

Does her school use social stories to help her understand things? I have a few of them for my 13yo daughter and they do help a lot.
I also agree that having a picture of her wetting the clothes or a PECS image with a line through it should help.

My daughter used to run out of the house about 5 years ago and we couldn't figure out how to stop her. Her teacher at the time suggested we put blue painters tape around the front door and print out a stop sign and tape it to the door. It worked! She figured out that she was not allowed to cross the tape and stop sign. It takes time and patience for this stuff but you will find a great solution!

@A MyAutismTeam Member They do use social stories at school. Maybe there's a way to make one about not running water on clothes! My daughter used to run out of the house a lot ( still does occasionally ) -and has even entered neighbors' homes, people we don't know. We have also had stop signs on our doors for a long time. I'd say they have helped, at least somewhat. The blue Painter's tape is really an interesting idea!! I'd like to hear more about that. We may have to try it sometime. Things are always crazier when the weather gets nice. I really appreciate you sharing your experiences and ideas!!!
