Bed Wetting
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is six and has been off and on bed wetting since he was potty trained at 3.5 yrs old. We have tried everything from cutting off drinks two hrs before bed and adding a water proof cover to putting him in big kid pull ups. He was just diagnosed with ASD. Does anyone have any tips or advice on how to handle this so that we don’t have to replace his bed every few months?

Walmart has mattress protection covers, they zip over the entire mattress, then we made a cover made from the diaper cover material from Joanns, in a huge sheet. My sister had kiddos that would sleep so deep they didn't wake when they had to pee so they would wet the bed. They would wake them up just enough to walk them to the toilet around midnight and that helped a lot.

I don't know about night training, other than hoping the kid manages to pick it up. We do the same things, cut off liquids before bed and sending her potty at bedtime whether she likes it or not. If anyone has advice on that, it would be cool for both of us. My daughter outgrew the kids' sleep pants, and she's not quite big enough for the adult small - plus, she has accidents more if she is in diapers (not really accidents, just being lazy because she knows she's in a diaper). There are bed mats that work pretty decently. I actually get the Walmart Parent's Choice brand. It covers most of the area that she rolls around in, and as long as they hit the mat it catches all of it pretty well. If she were a little more mobile in her sleep, we might use two. MJ has accidents about twice a month, so a nine-pack lasts a while - that's about how often I wash their sheets, anyway. We have a waterproof cover on their bed that we stick the mat on, for double protection. We had one that was a similar material to a shower curtain, that woke her up every time she'd move - we ended up moving our mattress cover to her bed, it's soft but still waterproof. Granted, after repeated washings, it's more "water-resistant." The mats stick very firmly, and it's hard getting all of the plastic off of the cover sometimes, but that's the only real negative. I got lucky with her sister, she was born night-trained. The child hasn't peed in her sleep in her life.

My son is almost 5 and had similar problems with going #2 in the potty. So this advice may or may not be helpful. (He was also just diagnosed too, which changed our tactics.) He took to peeing in the potty pretty well, but would never poop in the potty. It wasn't until recently that he got it down. We tried everything to get him to poop and nothing worked. We tried punishing him, again this was before the ASD. That always made it worse, punishment does not work on him, they cause meltdowns.

We finally took a step back and approached it differently. What sort of things motivate your son? For us our son CRAVES praises. His face will light up if you tell him "good job" or "way to go". The only small down side to praising him when he poops, he thinks pooping in the potty is amazing, and will now praise you if you poop! Which is mildly embarrassing, but harmless.

I guess I'm just saying that you might need to find something to really motivate him to not wet his bed. And also don't be so hard on yourself (if you are being.) My nephew is neurotypical and wet the bed last time I was there, he was 8. Sometimes it is just something that happens. Are you still having to replace his bed even if you have a waterproof cover?
