Any Suggestion If Insurance Doesn't Cover ABA?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am very sad today because I found that our insurance (united healthcare) doesn't cover the ABA therapy and it seems san diego regional center has the income limit for helping with that. I think it will be too expensive for us and I am not sure what we can do for our 3.5 year old son.any suggestion?
In our plan it is explained that
Mental health services for autism are not covered under the plan. Medical services for autism are covered if otherwise covered by the plan.

This is no lie or exaggeration, when my daughter was younger and her case was harder to control, I was her ABA therapist.
Don't just rely on therapists. They ( our kids) view it like they can push our buttons when sensory skills go outa wack. But when we stay firm and use certain methods to get everything back under control, they see it. Don't give in. You are their biggest teacher, therapist, and role model all in one.

I meant that some hospitals that have Speech, OT etc. also have behavioral therapy and offer a deal to people that do not have the coverage. That was our experience in Chicago. A back up idea. I am glad that you have the other therapy covered.

Ask the regional center. Our son's Early Intervention social worker told us where to apply. We did not get it until his preschool showed us how to apply for emergency crisis criteria. We had to go to a specific agency in our area that takes care of it.Illinois might be different. BTW, the hospital programs are sometimes available at hospitals that offer pediatric therapy or an Autism program. Some only offer Speech, OT and PT. Some have mental health or behavioral therapy.

I would apply for the waiver. That can be a lengthy process in some states. In the meantime, see if you have a hospital program in your area. Often covered or sliding scale. We did a program where we went to therapy for 90 minutes twice a week and did 10 hours of homework. We also went to a parent training and sent in videos. Our son was in a preschool program for a half day that used ABA strategies at the same time. You can hire a BCBA to come weekly and train you to do the programs. You can hire a student. Possibly through respite care. A BCBA at a hospital helped us put a program like that together and we used a student that had experience. (before hospital program started) You can try to get ABA in school. Some programs use it. The Verbal Behavior Book is a good start and easy to read. Also see what you can get covered. Speech, OT, PT. Have the therapists give you things to work on.
