How Long Does It Take For Them To Talk .... My Daughter Is Repeating Everything We Say!!

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Phoenix, AZ

My child is 3.5 now. She is into OT and ABA therapy since 2 months. She had regression earlier and lost her speech. Now once the therapies are she started with echolalia.... repeating everything we say. But she knows the meaning of some words. Does anyone’s child undergone the same. Will my child be able to use the words appropriately.. or else any tips to work with echolalia?? Will kids be able to come out from echolalia and talk the words meaningful manner??

Echolalia is very common among autistic people, but non-autistics does it as well. If you try to understand something, you will sometimes repeat the instruction. Some times they just repeat it because they like the sound. It could also be an OCD type thing, where they have to repeat the word 2 or 3 times in order to move on to the next word. It could be done out of anxiety or as a type of stim. Speech therapy is your best bet.

My daughter wasn’t able to say even 1 word last May . She would just grab my hand and take me to the kitchen so I can give her some milk . Now she came along way . She can talk English even better than me . But trust me I had no life for 1 year . No life for me just work work work with her . I worked so hard for 1 year I was the best speech therapist for my daughter . Nobody knows yr daughter but you . 1 or 2 hours a week with the best speech therapist in the world can’t help our kids but we could . Everything is possible with hard work . Good luck
