Our son is living in a condo close to our home. We are trying to help him live independently as he has asked. He has a worker that sees him for and hour or two on Thursday and Friday mornings. The workers are not really correcting and educating him: they are being "friends" instead. He doesn't plan very well, has poor hygeine habits and messy kitchen, etc. He is too high functioning for a group home, and is so happy living by himself in peace and quiet. The most encouraging thing for our younger generation is that autism is now so recognizable and there are so many educational programs to help/include them. And by the time your son is an adult there will be more accomodations available to him no matter his level of functioning. Back in 1966 no preschool or special school would take him. At age 6 the school psychologist refused to admit him to 1st grade because she got an I.Q. reading of zero. (That was because he blocked her out like she didn't exist. ) We got him tested privately by psychologists and they got an I.Q. of 80 so the special school was forced to take him. So, take heart because your son will be accepted and helped sooo much more now. Good luck and just love him because he will give you so much special joy!
You're welcome! I apologize, I did not realize you all were in Missouri. I hope you find the resources you need to get help for your son. My son is 9 and I think about the future for him all the time.
There is a community under construction for adults on the spectrum, it is called 29 Acres. Google 29 Acres for autism and you will find information on their website. Best of Luck!
I would think there should be a supported living program available to your son. An agency that would come in and teach him. The reality though, no matter how high functioning he is, he needs regular supervision to make sure his lifestyle is conducive to a healthy, productive life.
From my own opinion let him try, he wants to be independent and that’s better for him because he would learn a lot of responsibilities on being on his own and I am sure he may want a relationship with a lucky woman..... And remember you can always check up on him but please let him call his shots and if it doesn’t work out then that’s were you intervene hope this advice helps you you and your Son God Bless.....
