A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

He is going to be 7 end of the year.

Started recognizing A- Z about one year ago - 5 to 6 yrs old

Can recognize and say shape of square, circle, triangle
Can recognize 1 to 10.
Basic vocabs are fine, though limited - cat, car, house, flower, fan, etc etc.....

Had also started basic phonics for him about 4 months ago, results had been rather inconsistent and tend to forget easily, and also has tendency to keep repeating confused sounds -
at , ap, ick, all..

Just started to try spelling… read more

ASD kids need mobility to pay attention. Either they are mobile and paying attention or they are sitting in one spot zoned out and not learning.

Ok there is a supper DVD I bought when teaching my boys . Do not let the name put you off and it covers in stages age . So it's called my baby can read first I suggest you tube see it what it's about

Basically you could do this your self . Record an action or something and say word. Not sure I'm doing it justice but look it up the science behind it is really simple and it works fast . Your son will benifit greatly in lots of areas and hopefully catch up with his peers and create easier life . Take it from someone whose had communication difficulties it's no picnic ! So give it a try. And good luck 👍

One of my main challenge now is the FOCUS of my son when coming to academy.
Still couldn't get a way to get him interested, with very inconsistent result in terms of his focus, whereby more often he is not focused.

Been reading up alot of ADHD education on the internet, as I feel autistic kids when it comes to focus in education is very similar to the problem faced by ADHD.

Yeah,....generally Asians focus a lot on education, but sometimes maybe a little bit too much. Maybe it's due to some parents very competitive nature?

Well, before we had our son, I did tell my wife that we are not going to give pressure to our child in education, life needs to be balanced and grade results are not that important.
Not necessary to compete with other children...

What a great coincident in terms of our thinking and what we have now haha, and now we have an autistic son who is wayyyy behind in academy..

Thanks Shetha, yes, I had checked out the videos on the youtube. Its very basic, but the idea is there, learn words, and look at the video to see what the thing you learn does.
Had been practicing that approach as well with my son
