My child isn't high functioning but he does great with or without a routine. Didn't they say no two kids on the spectrum are the same but yet they try to enforce the same things for every child on the spectrum.. confused
You’re right no two children on the spectrum are the same but I think the majority do share some traits. My grandson definitely does better with a routine. He seems excessively anxious when things change. He seems to be most comfortable when he knows what is going to happen next and what is expected of him - not that he is necessarily is going to do it. Lol 😂 You know your child best and ultimately you have to make your own decisions about caring for him and what’s best.
@A MyAutismTeam Member, I get what you're saying, you're right too. In the end, we need to do what works for our kids, giving a little push now and then. 😊
I agree to an extent @A MyAutismTeam Member that’s why it’s good to change up the routine a little every now & then. That way they are exposed to something new. But I know my baby girl goes bananas when she encounters something new. So I try to keep a routine while introducing new things over time. It works better for my household that way. Less meltdowns more peace for everyone in the house lol
Having a routine is great for our ASD kids because they come to know what to expect & what is expected of them. It eases their anxiety. That’s why sometimes when you introduce new things to them they are really resistant & it can bring on anxiety & melt downs.
You're right, routine actually screws them because it causes them to fixate on specific times. As we know, life isn't like this, they're also not the ones who have to deal with meltdowns when their schedules change. When my son had behavior therapy at the house, I would agree, then blow them off, and change his schedule. Do what you need to do, but I wouldn't advise to call them on it, cause then they'll be jerks. Speak with the manager of the facility instead.
