Just structure your words and simplify your sentences; and use your picture cards to give him the choises he needs to express his wants and needs. And you’ve got it! 😉

I kind of wove it into each day.... concentrated on using the board for things like meals. Those were probably the easiest hours to use it, because there were so many easily teachable words. I guess it depends on what kind of attention span your son has! I'd say start easy (15 mins?) and build from there. But really, PECS doesn't need to be a "sit down and learn" experience. It's more like something you tie into normal life. Does that make sense?

No, I understand your worries! I fussed about that with my son, too. I think the key is to make him SAY everything- not just pointing. Max really likes to say single words; it's always a challenge to get him to say an entire sentence, even a short one. Picture sentences helped him at least a little bit. And in terms of picking up vocabulary, this is a great tool!

I actually think that 2 years old is a great time to use PECS. It's a very good way to teach simple words and pairs of words- for some kids pictures are MUCH easier to use and learn than actual letters and words and will stay that way. Try starting by introducing cards for words you know your kiddo already understands- probably nouns, things that she asks for (or would if she had the words).... "milk," "apple," "cookie," "play," "book,"..... and make a sentence strip with "I want....." at the top of the strip. THat's what I had for most of my students when i was teaching, and had for my son later in my life =) PECS is a pain in that YOU have to maintain it and keep the cards in order (and replace them when they're lost!), but the theory is kind of cool. Good luck!
