I’m seriously contemplating homeschooling my 10 year old daughter- every summer my daughter has to “recover” from school. But by November we have serious regression and delays in milestones which were achieved previously. She always is bullied and isolated as well- September and October are great but I can see the sensory overload build-
I’ve never been able to get schools to listen to what she needs so it’s a full time job of emails and frustration. Then we’re looked at like outcasts- the… read more
Positives-
1)Your daughter probably won’t regress
2) she can work at her pace and that will reduce anxiety if she has any.
3) bullying is taking a toll and she won’t suffer from that anymore
4) she will get one on one attention which is needed by some kids to thrive or even just function.
5) you can teach her in a way she likes to learn - completely specific to her learning style.
6) you won’t be worried about what’s her day like anymore cause you will know.
7) she could join social groups where she is among other kids like her or normal kids. Most groups are welcoming of autistic kids.
Honestly I could go on and on but you get the point.
@A MyAutismTeam Member where I live an educational consultant gives advice on where to go to school- unfortunately it costs $450/hour!! But I’m this context I think it might be an educational advocate perhaps?
Ive never homeschooled, but i think it would be good in the summertime to do so our boys dont lose progress.
I too have a 10 year old. He has HFA and I am seriously considering homeschooling. We too usually start out the school year on the right foot, but by winter break things are getting pretty stressful for him and us. There are lots of online school options I have been looking at and here in the Kansas City MO area there are homeschool groups that you can be a part of so that you and your child can do things with other children and parents sometimes as well. Like field trips, etc.
We have an advocate, who has been very useful, and got Max into his current school. She's $350/hour! My next step might be to try to find a private school for him, because I don't know that the school he's currently in will be enough for him (they're kind of at their limits already). I didn't know that educational consultants existed, that sounds really useful- thank you! Guess I'll start saving my pennines =)
