If a parent/caregiver suspects their child may have autism and would like to get their child tested, they are able to contact their nearest regional center. In NY if you suspect your child has a developmental delay you can actually dial 311 and you will be connected to the proper state agency , to initiate the evaluation process.
Most states have particular doctors that do this through their practices. They are behavioral psychologists doctors or psychiatrists. Call your area's Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (BHDS) to get the list of doctors practices that specialize in autism testing.
In Florida, the doctor recommended the agency to do the initial testing. It wasn't a regional center, but through the state I believe. We moved to California shortly after his initial diagnosis, so we able to utilize the regional centers. I'd suggest asking your doctor.....
