Car Rides
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 11 yr old daughter is severe and obsessed with car rides. She is constantly wanting to go on them and driving my husband and I nuts. We typically go on 4-5 daily. Each ride has to be a certain route and it has to be around 35 mins. If she doesn't get to go on one, she has horrific meltdowns. It's so expensive on gas, as well as wear and tear on our vehicles. Besides that, winter is coming and there's no way we want to continue driving her like this in the bad weather. We have a behavioral… read more

To answer car ride question: We got my 11 yr Son a laptop last year and showed him maps and gps driving directions to places. He still likes to go on car rides but not as much.

Does she have a bike? The motion could be a calming activity for her to possibly replace the car rides. Just a thought.

E needed car rides when she was younger to calm down. She just felt better after them. It was just once a day though for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Have you tried to give her more options to calm down? Sensory play? Swing? She probably needs motion. Shown her videos of car rides? While she sits in a rocking chair? Have you tried bringing her car seat inside and letting her sit in it? While she watches tv?

Good morning! Have you tried a picture schedule of when car rides will be during the daily routine?

Thank you and for responding. Yes, she has terrible anxiety. She is on a med, but it doesn't seem to be helping that issue much. She doesn't like TV shows, but has enjoyed music on YouTube for a very long time. Do you think she needs more coping mechanisms? I do feel the actual movement of the car ride helps her. She has stomach issues. The problem is that even when her stomach is fine, she still wants to go on them an excessive amount.
