Macon, GA

My daughter has been on depakote for a few months, however initially it seemed to be working but here lately the Cons out weigh the pros, it seems like the mood swings and irritability is getting worse. So, i guess it is back to the drawing board. Any suggestions on how to wean her off?

@A MyAutismTeam Member, you know, my husband and I had that very discussion, “questioning the rules.” I had told him, why don’t more people advocate for our children? He said because most, advocate for themselves, casepoint, African Americans, and the LGBTQQ for example. It made my heart sad, but I realized the validity of his statement. Many, not all people with autism, don’t possess the self-determination skills.
Anyhow, I’m digressing, it was crazy, I went off on the TV yesterday..... As much as I have been happy with the things our government has done lately, I disagreed with the comment made, mentioning how ALL our kids are doing fine with remote schooling. OUR kids aren’t, they were screwed bigtime and like always, society can give 2 dumps, nor see the reality of the big picture. I mean, heck, even when my son was in K-12, he still wasn’t taught how to adequately read to learn. And if I had known what I know now, he would’ve learned the proper way, but I am not a professional. And as we all can see, even professionals, no offense, may find it difficult to enable our children. It’s funny but sad, like I have always said, “No child left behind, unless, you have an intellectual disability.”
Just so you know, I am on your side, we’re stronger when we work as one. In the end, as parents of children with special needs, we are the only ones, not society, who will pick up the slack because of the love we have for them. Hell, no one taught my son to speak, I did, professionals told me he never would.

No offense taken ever by me. We need to always push each other and stretch each other. As you know it is us parents who are always made to do the heavy lifting with autism. Where is this whole Corona virus situation going to leave millions of kids grade wise AND development wise during this period of video learning? How many kids are going to be left in limbo or are going to just disappear into a system because of a serious lack of planning. So many kids are shutting down from Zoom learning, but we are supposed to believe nobody thought about this kind of thing happening? There are thousands of very smart teachers out there, they thought about it. But I’m sure they were told not to worry or there is a plan or worse yet...it won’t happen. It’s just like taking a cure for autism out of the daily thought. It removes the thought of basic nutrition and supplements from very caring mothers and fathers minds. We get told it’s too basic of a thought. But basic is always where we should start. Like my detective buddy said, the jobs direction should be easy to understand. When it gets complicated it’s because they want it to be to discourage progression. I remember @A MyAutismTeam Member saying several times that we need to train ourselves AND our kids to always question the “rules”. If we don’t they’ll get us believing their lies are our truth. I’m not ready for that mess.
Hope you have a good day today!

Yikes, there’s no cure for autism. Unless your child has epilepsy, or a bipolar disorder then by all means get help. However, I wouldn’t advise medicine to fix behaviors from autism.
