our 14 year old was recently diagnosed Severely High Functioning Autistic. We are having a hard time getting him to participate in the classroom (they use laptops and he just wants to play video games). at home he just wants to watch videos on Youtube or shows, on his laptop, instead of do his work. Al his teachers say he is very capable to be an A student, however he thinks its redundant and unnecessary. Last year we had a problem with HW, this year its Tests and HW. Please Help!
I always hate it when someone says my kid is "perfectly capable," of whatever task he or she is failing at. If they can't do it, they can't do it. It is not all about IQ. What looks like laziness, or obstinance, is just an autistic brain getting stuck. Not wanting to do things that seem redundant or unnecessary is a very common autistic trait. When they just say he is capable, they are saying he can do it, but not wanting to is just a character flaw. Sometimes you just have to accept that they learn differently, and not try to force their learning to look neurotypical.
I understand how you feel with this too. My daughter is 10 and she has a hard time finishing her work after school. It takes a lot of hugs and me talking her through it. My husband says i need to nstop engaging with her and tell her go do her work but when she hears him says that she just starts screaming and crying more. She needs lots of comfort and hugs. She is high functioning also so what i had to do was take away all electronics when school starts and she doesn’t get them back till school is done and we go over her google classroom together. She fought it the first week but she is happy when she gets her electronics back at 3 when homework is done. Not sure if that will work for you but maybe something to try.
My daughter had this issue back when she was in brick and mortar school. We brought her home and cyber schooled her and once she understood she had free time after her work was done for the day she did better. She was really academically smart and bored with the in school schedule. It’s a total retraining for them and we ran into issues with her thinking she could cheat the “trust” process and fall behind. But once we went through that drama she did very well. She even started to do her work at 1 1/2 time. She got her weekly work done in 4 days so she could have 3 day weekends every week which was spent playing video games and talking with her online friends.
Amazing how high functioning autistics can be so book smart but still have a regular mental delay. She can read on a scholar level but ask her to do something like “bring me the jar of cherries behind the milk from the fridge” and she falls apart!
No electronics during school week, since he can't stay off the video games during class. Not working. Shame, cause when he does get the work done it's fast and he always aces it. We are at our whits end
