My 10-year Old Daughter Still Sucks Her Thumb At Night
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anyone else have an issue with an older child sucking their thumb? My daughter has level 1 autism and she will be 11 next month. She still sucks her thumb at night and it’s caused some issues with her teeth already. But the orthodontist said the first step is getting her to stop the thumb sucking. We have tried a Thumb Guard, gloves, incentives and nothing has worked yet. She definitely wants to communicate. She talks all the time but I constantly have to ask her to slow down and say it again so I can understand and that gets frustrating for her. I’m going to look into a chewy for her. That might help soothe her to sleep!

@A MyAutismTeam Member, Sometimes (as I learned) you have to really watch and listen and they will teach you their language.
My Son uses a 'Mutted' version of communication. He mixed a few ways of communicating and does some things backwards with Sign Language.
'Anxiety' comes from wanting to communicate and struggling to communicate.

She has anxiety and a severe speech delay also so talking isn’t a strong point for her. She is doing ABA therapy and I plan to ask the therapist for help also.

Have you considered getting her a Chew device? They make a specific Chewie for people on the spectrum @A MyAutismTeam Member.

My son also does this, it’s a self soothing behavior due to anxiety for him. Have you thought of taking her to a therapist to talk through her anxieties? It seems you’ve tried everything else.
