7 Yr Old Prescribed Depakote
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

hello, my son is 7 yrs old with an ASD diagnosis, his father told me that his pediatrician was putting him on 350mg of Depakote daily, he says its because my son had 2 seizures recently, but I feel like it is being used to sedate him. Is this normal?

According to the epilepsy foundation website, the starting dose for children is between 15 to 60mg. It also says dosage is based on the child’s weight, 5 to 10mg. per kg. of body weight. Also, it says it shouldn’t be prescribed to children under 10 yrs. Old. I would contact your pediatrician to consult about the safe dosage.

Thank you so much for the info. I will definitely reach out to the pediatrician who my ex, my son's dad, took him to without my knowledge. He didn't tell me he did that till afterward, he alienates me when it comes to anything involving my son.

Depakote is primarily used for seizures. It also acts as a mood stabilizer. 350mg is a relatively low dose, so I wouldn't think it would have a sedating effect. How does he seem?
