Help / Recommendations For Potty Training
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi. our almost 5 years old is still struggling with potty training. No progress over the past 12 months, 5-6 accidents per day. We are really struggling and it is preventing him from going to pre-school, which he needs for his development (and our sanity). He can handle pee but he has absolutely zero idea for #2. We are not getting any help whatsoever from the pediatrician, OT etc. The traditional techniques don't work at all. He screams and fight back when we ask him to go on the potty, even… read more

Sometimes you have to do things for their own good, regardless on how they feel, and after a few times they will accept the positive changes.

I'm surprised the preschool does not let him go even if not potty trained. When my oldest son went to preschool and on an IEP they weren't pressuring us to get him potty trained. Is the preschool for mixed classrooms?(typical and special needs kids together)

Our oldest still isn't potty trained but he is more willing to go on the potty. It has taken time for him to mature and be ready. We did a sticker chart where he had to pee in the potty 3 times to earn a prize. This was a great positive incentive. Maybe you could do 3 sits on the potty to earn a prize. It has to be something he really likes and only offered for potty training. Helps to have the prize visible too.

You are not alone! Don't give up.

My son went through this as well. It definitely took a lot of patience and tears from both ends. It took us a couple years as well but we just played on Davis' repetitive behaviors. We played potty songs, used potty watches, and physically showed him numerous times. Maybe try screen time or some other stimulation. For Davis he loves to read so I put all his favorite books by the toilet. I hope this helps, my prayers go out to you.

thx. preschools can let him but they won't change him if we put him in diapers (this is what we experience in the 3years + category). Maybe we are missing something but the vibe I got from the schools we visited is that he would be the only non potty trained and that he would have to stay in his dirty diaper if we were to send him with diapers. We tried the stickers and everything, he threw everything in the trash bin and gets super pissed every time I try a new tactic.

@A MyAutismTeam Member, keep it entertaining while in the bathroom.
Let your child have a toy while in there, even allow them to watch videos that make them laugh to help them both forget where they are and to help move the fecal matter through.
Reward with a Bath/Shower (whichever they tolerate the best) afterwards.
Make it as positive event was possible for their brief time in there.
Also, remove all distractions outside the bathroom, like Muting the TV (if possible) or any other thing that they do outside the bathroom.
Keep all the 'Fun' in the bathroom.
