Other Parent And School?

My 12 yr old has been so bad at home and refusal school I had to make him go stay a few weeks at his dad's just a few miles down the road from me. He was making myself and his siblings late for school/work. My job already has me on a tight rope because of all of this so I'm trying to not loose my job at all. Well his dad came and picked him up and I judt had an iep meeting and found out his father has not taken him to school once since he's had him! Sadly for me. Years ago I fought my city hard… read more

I like how the school doesn’t hold the dad accountable and won’t give you an exception given that you didn’t do it. I hope you can find compassion for him on the money piece. Maybe there’s a way he can earn money through extra chores. You are doing good, hope you can find some way he can stay in the school I know you worked your tail off to get him in there.

Well I know he can't drop out but his dad doesn't explain the importance, or even parent he's more like a friend. And since his father doesn't not pay his court appointed child support. Has never helped me with anything meeting, appt, ect when things get tuff I make him get him because I'm running on 4 hours of sleep. I have 4 kids 2 in high school one about to graduate. So trying to wait for my house to be completed to move, my husband works alot, the other kids and this 1 that all he does is want to fight and whine. Screams about asking for simple chores, refuses to clean his room, and the theft he finally told his brother last night it's because I don't give him money and since his dad doesn't answer he had stuff he wanted to buy. Well besides the theft believed me I'll get my money back. Birthday money will go back to me he will quit. But his dad is not enforcing him to go to school. Apparently during the iep meeting today they have not seen him in a week. I call and text his dad... nothing. Apparently his dad doesn't like waking up before noon. So yet again this falls on me and the school said they do not feel comfortable talking to dad about attendance. Well because of his dad not taking his ass to school he was dropped from a school I fought a year for him to get into. So after the 16th of June he will be back in a public school that has no programs for him and he's 12 and still on a kindergarten reading level.... I'm livid and my son is living it up because his dad is allowing him to be like him and do nothing because a woman is doing it all!

Your son can't drop out of school at age 12 unless I'm missing something.

Virginians may legally drop out of high school once they turn 18. Students who are 16 or 17 may also leave regular school, but only after they’ve had a meeting with their parents and the principal to set up an individual student alternative education plan.

School Alternatives and Exemptions
Virginia allows alternatives to regular full-time public school, including:

private school
private tutoring
homeschooling, and
alternative study or work/study programs.
Children are also exempt from compulsory education if they:

are opposed to school, along with their parents, because of a genuine religious conviction, concern for the students’ health (with medical evidence), or justified fear for the students’ safety
can’t benefit from education
have contagious diseases or haven’t completed their immunizations, or
live a certain distance from the nearest public school (two or two and a half miles, depending on the students’ age), and there’s no public transportation nearby.

Watch out for the thefts. My nephew started stealing small stuff and he had a drug problem as well. He's now doing a 10 year sentence in a Florida prison. It's no joke but some kids don't get the message.
