For those of you who have kids that are not non verbal how old where they when they started speaking in sentences? Thanks in advance for your response.
He was 4.5 years old, around the same time he was fully potty-trained, but still needed prompts. Every child is different. I agree with @A MyAutismTeam Member, just do your best for your child. PECS and AAC device or iPad are helpful tools. I ask my son to type or write ✍️ if I can’t understand him or if he is having trouble expressing himself.
My son was 4 almost 5. Speech therapy helped a great deal. My son is 22 years old now .He never gives a full back and forth conversation but he gets his point across. He lets me know when he wants to eat and go to the store things like that.
Mine still hasn't.
Don't expect too much, just do your best and what comes of it, just accept.
My Son has Words, but He generally has other ways of communicating.
I’ve read that anywhere from 25 to 40% of Autistics are nonverbal. I think it also depends on if the child is diagnosed with an intellectual disability or not. Those born without ID are much more likely to speak in full sentences as they grow up. The quality & quantity of speech therapy received can also make a difference. The brain’s neurological processes are very complicated so there is no way to determine at what age any child will speak.
My daughter was 2 years old before she started forming words, about three when she finally started forming sentences. We learned some sign language and that helped a lot.
