Potty Training A 5 Year Old
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son has almost no interest in potty training. We finally got to the point where he no longer freaks out when we sit him on the potty, but he's not much of a communicator, so we've made no progress. He is vocal, but most of his speech is just an echo of things he hears. Just needing some guidance because I feel like a failure. Thank you.

When they say kids will go when they are ready it’s true !! my 5 yo daughter started one day and hasn’t stopped!! I tried for a whole year with no luck then I just gave up and let her go when she was ready and she did it !!

Do you have any older siblings that he can watch? Mine had no interest in the toilet until this summer when he started watching his big brother. He still won't poop in the toilet but we have discovered he likes standing up to pee just like big brother. I also got him a "potty schedule" card from Amazon that shows all the steps in pictures of using the potty and you can choose to have one showing standing up or sitting down.

I found it better not to make them sit on the potty for too long. First figure out his schedule. Go into the bathroom when it is around the right time. Let him do something he enjoys, like play with the sink faucet. Maybe without pants, so you can be watching closely. Catch him as he is about to, or even in the act of peeing and put him on the potty. Then praise, but not excessive praise for peeing where pee goes.

Hello so what we have neen doing with our son only 2yrs we started intro to potty training. we set timers for like 10 -15 10 on 15 off. We let him know in 10 mins we going to sit on potty. We give him his tablet and cars and we sit with him. And we play potty songs on the tv so he can see and hear. Try it out and your not a failure keep up the great work mom.
