I work in early childhood education and while we can’t diagnose we can screen and refer. I did our screenings on my daughter and with the results consulted for a screening and have been placed on a wait list. Unfortunately in our area the wait list is almost 2 years long. I am struggling to get support from those around us as it’s hard for them to believe she would have autism. My parents especially, I know it’s contributing to outdated views. Any advice?
Unfortunately there is a waitlist everywhere around here. It’s something we struggle with in our job as we often have to refer for further screenings. I know she has autism, I just find it hard without an actual diagnosis to get the support from others because to them it’s just to hard to admit. Not to mention the resources available after an official diagnosis. We have early intervention and occupational therapy may be beneficial for her so I could look into that but other than that there isn’t much they can help with on the waitlist.
Can you check with the early intervention service in your state and see if they recommend any one or way to get an eval sooner? Call child pyschologist who take your insurance and see if they can provide or recommend anyone, also providers of aba therapy may have a recommendation for a diagnosis. Call the 800 for Autism Speaks and they may have a reccomendation.
I also suggest calling and checking on the waitlist once a week.
You need a diagnosis sooner. Is there another city you can take him to? A doctor there? Ignore your parents. They don’t live with him full time or see the things you see.
