My girlfriend thinks my son needs to be in programs with people like him. He needs to be more independent and be more social. I don't know what to do, any suggestions?

I believe that you and your ex wife would know your son best. If he is verbal you can ask him what he wants and what his goals are. There are some good day programs out there that focus on a variety of skills including daily living independence and social engagement. I imagine your girlfriend is trying to be helpful and I don’t know the dynamics or history. That being said it doesn’t hurt to consider what she is saying but trust yourself to know what is best for your child😊

I really like the advice of the above respondents. It’s true that much will probably have to do with his “functioning level,” but there ARE many support agencies available.
We don’t know what his parents have done to assist him…but your suggestions are good. There are national, state & local non profits who can help.
A bit of researching can go a LONG WAY!!
Good luck!! 👍🏽

Hi Antnioreyes

My name is Harriet Woolf and my son is Robert Woolf who is 53 years old. He wasn't diagnosed until he was in his 30's. He is PDD and works part-time. My suggestions are applying for SSI from Social Security they are open from 8 A.M. till 7 P.m. don't call the 1st of the month. There are special programs at universities, and community colleges. Here in Maryland, we have the Hussman Center for adults with Autism and it is affiliated with Towson University. They have programs and college classes for adults with Autism. Also, every state has a program from Disability Determination Administration. Which supply money to assit with hiring an agency to provide support for adults with Disabilities.

There is one place you can go to learn everything you need to know about this journey I just try to learn something new every day. If I can be any other help, please contact me at this site.

Harriet
