I've had experience with it myself, in the past and it did help at the time. I believe it's something you have to keep up on.

I just completed CBT and DBT skills/ group therapy last month. I agree with Holly8. You have to use the skills regularly.

How CBT is Adapted for Autism
Visual Supports: Using thermometers, charts, or pictures to map anxiety levels or social situations.
Personalized Interests: Incorporating a person's special interests (like superheroes) into examples or reinforcers.
Concrete Language: Focusing on observable behaviors and using clearer, less abstract language.
Social Skills Training: Role-playing and social stories to practice interactions.
Caregiver Involvement: Training parents to help facilitate exposures and practice skills at home.
Common Targets for CBT in Autism
Anxiety: Addressing avoidance, panic, and fear through exposure therapy (facing fears gradually).
Negative Thinking: Challenging "all-or-nothing" thinking and overgeneralization.
Emotional Regulation: Managing intense distress, tantrums, or shutdowns.
Social Difficulties: Building confidence and skills for social situations.
What to Expect in Therapy
Identifying Triggers: Pinpointing situations that cause distress.
Changing Thoughts: Learning to recognize and reframe unhelpful thoughts.
Learning Coping Skills: Developing relaxation techniques and problem-solving strategies.
Behavioral Practice: Trying out new behaviors in session and at home.
Is it Effective?
Studies show adapted CBT is effective for reducing anxiety in autistic children and adolescents, often outperforming standard approaches.
It's a powerful tool for managing co-occurring conditions like depression, anxiety, and PTSD, but it's not a cure for autism itself.

Have you or your child tried CBT or other talking therapies?

While the search results don't specifically mention CBT, many parents on MyAutismTeam have found behavioral therapy helpful for their children. Behavioral therapy involves understanding what causes challenging behaviors and working together to manage them.

Some common therapies parents report as working well include:

- Behavioral therapy (like ABA therapy) - helps with understanding and managing behaviors
- Speech therapy - assists with communication and expressing feelings
- Occupational therapy - helps with sensory processing and social interaction
- Sessions with psychiatrists/psychologists - for mental health support

A MyAutismTeam member shared that therapy approaches emphasizing collaboration, autonomy, and emotional safety tend to be most effective. Other options like art therapy and music therapy can also be beneficial depending on individual interests and needs.

It's worth noting that what works best varies greatly from person to person. Many parents find it helpful to try different approaches to see what resonates with their child's specific needs.

Would you like to know more about any specific type of therapy?
