Emma is 4 and nonverbal. She has never been in school or really ever around other kids. Our life is hard and complicated and its always really just been her and I. Well she started preschool last month. And today is her second time coming home with not a good face because she wasn't listening and climbing all over the furniture in the classroom today. Emma loves to climb on everything and she is such a little dare devil. I mean I know she is 4, nonverbal and severely autistic. But how do I not… read more

A mom asked for support after her 4-year-old nonverbal daughter with severe autism came home with a sad face from her special needs preschool, feeling like she was failing as a parent. Many community members reassured her that worrying about her child is itself a sign of good parenting, and several shared practical tips like sharing her daughter's interests with teachers to build connection and using visual schedules. A recurring theme was warmth and encouragement, reminding her she is not alone and that her advocacy for her daughter is something to be proud of.

Awww thank you so much all of you for taking the time to comment!!!! And yes emma is in a ESE self contained preschool class. She made number 8. We got the last spot In the class. So there will never be more then 8 kids in the class. But because it is ese self contained it is the age of 3-5. And due to emma have a September birthday she will actually be with this teacher and the 2 aids she has all next school year as well.

I agree w/ AnnaMcElroy- is she in a special needs class especially the small spec ed class?

She has to test her limits like any other kid. That preschool is not for her. Does your state have an "Autism Intervention Program"?

BrandiSpencer- we as parents at least this is how I felt-that I wanted some feedback that I was doing a great job with my kids. I will tell you that you're a great mom who wants the best for your child and you're doing just that by being here and asking for help and guidance.
