Self-care for autistic people focuses on sensory regulation, honoring energy limits, and accommodating neurodivergent needs to prevent burnout. Key practices include using sensory tools (noise-canceling headphones, weighted blankets), engaging in special interests (SPINs), establishing predictable routines, setting social boundaries, and allowing for unmasking time.

What self-care routines can help with relaxation and calming?

Those are wonderful self-care techniques you've learned! The warmth and gentle touch you're describing can be really soothing. Here are some additional calming practices that might complement what you're already doing:

Breathing exercises:
- Place a warm hand gently on your belly while lying down
- Take a small, gentle inhale through your nose
- Exhale slowly through your mouth
- Focus on the exhale, as it's the most important part for relaxation

Bedtime relaxation:
- Try the breathing technique while lying in bed
- You can use a warm compress, water bottle, or heated buckwheat bag on your belly instead of your hand if that feels better
- This can help you breathe more deeply and relax

Self-compassion practice:
- Place a hand on your chest (like a friend's comforting touch)
- Hold your own hand
- Say kind phrases to yourself like "this is really hard right now" or "may I be gentle with myself"

Remember, learning to calm yourself takes time and practice. Be patient with yourself as you explore what works best for you. The techniques you shared are great starting points, and combining them with breathing and self-compassion can create a powerful self-care routine.
