Taking care of yourself is a must. Researching different agencies and resources is also very important.

My son had been in one group home for 30 years before things became so bad that I had to overcome my fear of moving him to another group home. I am so glad I made that decision. He is being fed regularly and is well cared for—for the first time in a very long time. He is happy now.

The list of things that happened to him is unimaginable, and that is only what I know about. I now wonder what may have happened that I never knew about. My biggest regret is that I didn’t move him sooner.

Here are a few things I would recommend:

Document everything. Keep records of anything that concerns you, including dates, conversations, incidents, and the names of the people involved.
Go online and research agencies and resources that are available in your area. There may be more resources available than you realize.
If you can’t find an active parents’ group for parents of children with disabilities, consider starting one. They don’t have to have autism. There are many other disabilities, and there are parents who need support, too.
If caregivers are taking things that belong to your child, report it to the police. I did, and I also filed for a restraining order. I believe this is a must. People who steal from a disabled person have no business being around anyone who is disabled.

What you're carrying right now is enormous, and it makes complete sense that you're feeling alone and overwhelmed. Being a single parent navigating a care home situation — especially where your son has been taken advantage of — is one of the hardest things to face. Your love for him is so clear in every word you've written.

Many MyAutismTeam members share this exact feeling of isolation and carrying the full weight alone. You are absolutely not the only one walking this road, even though it can feel that way. Here are some things that may help ease the burden a little:

- Document everything — keep written records of any concerns about the care home, including dates and incidents
- Request regular meetings with care home staff to set clear expectations for your son's care
- Connect with a local autism support network — other parents and caregivers often know which services and advocates can help
- Look into an independent advocate who can represent your son's rights within the care home setting
- Reach out online to other autism caregivers who've navigated care home situations

You deserve support too, not just your son. Taking care of yourself isn't selfish — it actually makes you a stronger protector for him.
