A little while ago, my daughter was sitting on the sofa. Her eyes got really big ...you know, the way a person's eyes do when they have just been told something really shocking? I have seen her do this before, but never for this long (5-10 seconds). I have been concerned about the possibility of her having seizures for the last 2 years because of her age, and because about 2 years ago, she had an abnormal EEG. The last Neurologist we took her to said "a lot of kids with Autism have abnormal EEGs!". That… read more
Recently I saw a post about an "Autism Birthday card Club" on this site. Does anyone remember that, and have a link for it? Basically, you can put your child (teen) on a list to receive a birthday card, and also send birthday cards to other kids with Autism who are having birthdays. I thought it was a cool idea. I would enjoy seeing my daughter recieve a few b-day cards, and would love sending cards even more ! !
This question is for anyone who has a son or daughter (especially a teenager) who has been taking "Abilify". My 14 yr. old daughter has been taking Abilify for roughly 2 -3 years. At first, it really helped her. I really began noticing about a year ago that it didnt seem to be working anymore. This became even more obvious several months later after the doctor increased the dosage several times. What did your son or daughter take after discontinuing Abilify? Did it work, and for how… read more
Would anyone reading this who has had any success getting a one to one aide for their son or daughter at school mind sharing how you were able to do this? Did you have to get an attorney? My daughter is not only nonverbal, but has behavior problems. I am not getting all of the info. I should be about what goes on at school because obviously they are understaffed. A doctor who my daughter once saw where we used to live gave us a written recommendation that she have a one on one aide at… read more
This question is for parents with a daughter or son with Autism on the Severe side. Do any of you have a kid who does this when they are extremely upset ....or maybe they jump up all of the sudden, go to another chair and start whining, crying and screaming? Somehow the thought of seizures crosses my mind, although my daughter doesn't have any of the usual signs of seizures. Sure, it's possible I am missing something. She once had a therapist… read more
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to block crotch pulling behavior? My 14 year old daughter does this, usually when she's upset. It seems to make her more upset, yet seems uncontrollable. If if I tell her to "stop" she will have a very long, hysterical screaming fit that will probably last for an hour or more.
Has a Montesori school been a good fit for your child with high functioning autism? Any feedback would be helpful. My daughter will be entering middle school and has dealt with bullying and social awkwardness.
We are looking into doing a Due Process after paying a lawyer for nearly two years $6,000 only to have her just release us withoiut doing any work not even contact a district that denied our daughter in 12th grade FAPE. We have evidence of at least 10 IDEA violations and about the same amount in state education laws. Too late for a citizen complaint and the district has ignored us for these past two years. Doing some research and looking… read more
This is my first post, so thanks in advance.
My 9 (almost 10) yo daughter is autistic, has ADHD, SPD, ODD, anxiety, and bladder dysfunction to name a few. I hate listing out her "labels" because that is not who she is; however, because of all of these, she has difficulty making sure to drink enough through the day AND does not use the bathroom properly...holds until too late and also wears pullups at night. She gets frequent UTIs (no structural issues… read more
My daughter has mild autism but also severely depressed. Public school triggers her depression and anxiety and she's been in 5 different schools in about as many years. She just started middle school after being kicked out of the alternative school she was in. She's going downhill - doesn't care about anything, no bathing, no interest in previously enjoyable activities. It just kills me.
Now I'm considering taking her out to do virtual school… read more
