Is occupational therapy most effective in a clinical environment?

My son receives OT at home and in clinic, and his OT is recommending we change to a clinic only program for increased effectiveness. I see OT type needs (fine and gross motor skills, self-help) that can be done at home (ie teaching to cut or draw or write can be done anywhere?)...where some of the swinging, jumping, etc. is great at the gym. The thinking being pitched is that more gym time will lead to progress in the fine/gross motor skills. What… read more

Throwing Technology- Teenage Son

My son just turned 15. For the past couple of years he has had this obsession of throwing technology.

He use to love to pay with his tablet, computer, Wii, DS, etc. Now he won't even touch a TV remote.

He gets irritated at the smallest glitch, such as slow speed, hitting a wrong button, etc. He feels like if this happens he has no choice but to throw the item.

He's been through therapy and tried hypnosis, but nothing has helped. I want him to be able to use technology for fun and… read more

IEP next step once refused? Want functional behav evsl.

I am in CA. My son is in kinder (hf asd/adhd). I had an IEP meeting on Thursday & was told IEP is refused since he is near passing grade level & not failing. The issue is he is sitting under a table during most class time if not chosen to be a helper. He has also had a min. Of 5 head injuries since October at school. Tripping, lack of focus/excitement, kicked, head butted (lack of awareness of spatial distance/personal space/lacking social cues.

We got a new puppy, need help

Idk if anyone can help me with this, or not. Here goes.
We got a black lab puppy 2 weeks ago. My husband and I are dog lovers and Roman has always seemed to do well around dogs.
The puppy is so sweet and great and learning things really well. I've already bonded with the puppy, but Roman seems very uninterested. Any time the puppy comes to him for attention, he cries and starts kicking at her. I'm always there so no one is getting hurt or anything, but I'm worried he won't bond with… read more

Does your child like to take walks? If yes let him know the puppy likes walks to and see if he might want to help walk the dog.

Looking for suggestions in getting 6 yr old dressed for school.

My son is 6 years old and attends school M-F. Lately every morning it has been a challenge getting our son to get dressed. He has a meltdown and fights with us. He punches, kicks, screams, you name it. If we tell him to stop hitting he has even more of a meltdown. This has become an issue not because by the time he finally calms down and gets dressed we end up being late to school. We have tried having him pick his clothes. We have also tried having… read more

What experiences have you had with apraxia of speech? What does it look like and what is evaluation process like?

My son is 4 and minimally verbal. Any language he has is not very functional and often sounds much like baby babbling. We started using Gemiini video program with him and his vocabulary is slowly increasing. The videos use discrete modeling and repetition of words to teach vocabulary and skills. It seems that by the way he pays attention to the mouth movements and the way he sometimes focuses when… read more

How do you manage aggressive and self injurious behavior?

My 2 1/2 year old has moderate-severe autism and is non verbal. A lot of the times he will pinch his arms (sometimes occasionally biting them as well). Recently, he has started head banging a lot and will repeatedly hit his head on the hard wood floor over and over again or other objects. His ABA therapists and OT say to block It with my hand but I feel like that isn’t effective in dealing with it long term and there are times when I’m not close enough to… read more
