Fear not! I don’t know which way it will go, but the only person you need to check in with is his doctor. When my son was about 1 1/2 to 2, he would eat chicken, french toast, smiley fries, yogurt and… read more

How Can I Get My 15yrs Old Autistic Son To Touch And Wash His Own Hair?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Chino, CA

I use a picture schedule for showering, ie; each picture shows which body parts to wash, and when its time to rinse his body. He does not have any problem using the detachable shower head to rinse off. However, he refuses to touch his hair to shampoo and to assist with rinsing out the shampoo.

My son does use a sponge mitt for washing his body, so that is not a big problem. How can I get my son to not only pour the shampoo into his own hands, place it on his head, and then wash his own… read more

How Do You Wash Your Child's Hair?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Las Vegas, NV

Jacob is 10 and haircuts and hair washing is huge problem. I am trying to find anyway possible to help him feel more comfortable. I have tried to cut his hair at home and he gets so anxious he will start vomiting, I have tried a salon and he shuts down or panics. It's the same situation with washing his hair. He really doesn't like baths or showers and when I try to wash his hair, he cries, panics or shuts down. I have used baby shampoo so it won't hurt his eyes. I bought a handheld sprayer so… read more

Flushing Foreign Objects Down The Toilet

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Vail, AZ

Has anyone dealt with their child flushing foreign objects down their toilets (e.g., toys, string, etc.)? We're trying to figure out what the fascination is, but more importantly, how to stop the behavior! TIA.

A MyAutismTeam Member

Dealing with it for many years. Hate to say it, but there is not a magic solution. We usually resort to locking the bathroom - even then he finds a key. Turning off water, disabling the flusher etc… read more

If you could spend one day as your child what would you think you would do? How would you try to communicate so that others around you could truly understand? What would you say? How would you feel?

Has Anyone Had Issues With Stealing By Your ASD Child? What Did You Do To Stop This Behavior?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Tucson, AZ

We have a 10 year old son with ASD. He steals whatever he wants with no remorse. He has been doing this for years. He steals food, candy, money, toys from stores. I have to do a pocket check if I take him shopping with me. If you ask him if stealing is wrong, he says yes. Yet the behavior goes on. What should we do?

What Has Anyone Done With Their Children When They Develop A Fascination With Lighting Matches And/or Fire?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Maple Valley, WA

My son recently got into a box of matches in the garage and we found them after the fact. He had basically scratched off the lighting pad but several of the matches had been lit. Then about a month later he found them again (I thought they had been locked up!) and we found evidence in the garage of hundreds of matches that had been burned and when I went to call him inside I noticed a small 2 inch fire going in the grass behind him. We have spoken to our pediatrician and have a referral to… read more

This is one of those things where I think supervision is key. If he is on the cognitive level of an 8 or 9 year old it may not be in his best interest to leave him alone long enough to light hundreds… read more

How To Stop My Son From Eloping?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Chicago, IL

My son don't understand the danger of walking off. He do things by memory. For example he is six year old and we visited the museum by public transportation. So he got caught leaving our home and in the front the house. I asked where are you going? And without a care in the world he told me dinosaurs mommie. I said how? And he explained exactly how we travel. He honestly thought he could and should make the 40 min trip by himself. He don't understand why he can't come and go by himself.

6 Year Old Won’t Keep Nappy On

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Antrim, NH

My ASD son is 6 year old, non verbal and still not toilet trained. He has severe developmental delay and no awareness for potty training yet, mentally he’s around 3 and only obeys single word simple commands. He prefers being completely naked, but would pee all over the place or smear his poo so we remedied this by buying back opening onesies. This worked for a while but now with the onsies on he’s snapping his nappy off and pulling it down his legs to get it off, we’ve tried onsies with feet… read more
