My daughter is desperately lonely. The only interaction with children she's had in Lake Havasu City has been negative. She has been teased and bullied and treated terribly by everyone at school. She misses Colorado and all of the support she had there. I also need to find a pediatrician and a therapist for her, but we are so new, and know so few people here, that we don't know where to turn or who to ask for advice. Is this maybe the place for some answers?
Best thing is Girl Scouts. If you can't afford the $12 registration..its free! The social interaction is great and they are really good with my daughter ..and believe it or not...my son. No bullying or exclusion is tolerated.
We had to put ours into a private Christian school. Kids still pick but it's not as cruel and the teachers and principal are much more supportive. They don't allow bullying at all - 0 tolerance! because it goes against Christian values.
Our local Easter Seals chapter has a social group for children with Asperger's or HFA. My children love the activities and have made some good friends within the group. The children are very inclusive and welcoming, but they have aslo been known to "tell it like it is" when someone's behavior is inappropriate. It has helped my children a lot.
...also... I'd speak IMMEDIATELY with your daughter's school about the bullying. Document anything you notice as much as possible too.
Thank you all for your kind and helpful ideas! I removed Jazzmine from school after an intolerable incidence of bullying pushed her to make a plan to end her life. I caught her in time, but it was an eye-opening, heart breaking experience. She literally would have rather died than face those children another day. I have been putting together a mishmash of school work for her to do during school hours and she is doing really beautifully now. I can't believe that this was happening right under my nose. I saw how unhappy she was, and she told me about the bullying. I tried to help her cope with stupid platitudes like "sweetie, I know that kids can be very mean, but I really want you to work on learning to ignore these people and learn how to cope with their meanness because the world can be very mean, and I want you to have the ability to let the mean stuff that people say just roll off of your back" I've had 4 conferences with the principal, and the entire school board, special education team, classroom teacher...who all assured me that Jazz was "over reacting" to what they believe was "a miscommunication" between the students. I will say that I am not the kind of person-especially not the kind of Mother- to take abuse of any kind. I was assured that the problem was being managed and that Jazz would be closely monitored and extra attention would be afforded to her well being. I explained that should I be forced to bring the matter to their attention again, I would involve the proper authorities. All of my "interventions and well meant advice" literally almost cost me my beautiful child. At this point, my husband and I have planned our schedules so that we can keep Jazz home, safe, supervised and supported. We took her home to Colorado for a short visit with her best friend, her cousins (closest to siblings as she will ever have) and her Mema (Grandma) and she seems to be my precious little Jazz once more. No more suicidal thoughts, clear skies abound. I have made an appointment with a therapist, and I do hope that this person will be a neutral and helpful clinician who is able to earn Jazzy's trust and friendship. It is wonderful to have this place to share and know that I am not alone here. God Bless you all for your compassion and empathy.
