Hi, Our son has a very hard time when it comes to sleeping and we have tried Clonidine, Risperidone and now Guanifacine but he is still having a hard time sleeping. When I say a hard time, last night he was up most of the night crying and looking into hi mother's eye's saying PLEASE help! Casey in Non Verbal! Any suggestion on what may have worked for your child going through the same thing? Thank you!

Parents discussed various approaches to help a nonverbal child struggling with severe sleep issues, with melatonin emerging as the most commonly recommended solution, though several noted their children built tolerance or needed higher doses over time. Many members shared medication combinations including trazodone, Ambien, clonidine, and Seroquel, while others emphasized non-pharmaceutical approaches like magnesium supplements, Epsom salt baths, dietary changes such as the GAPS diet, and wearing children out with intensive daily activities. A recurring theme was the exhausting trial-and-error process of finding what works for each individual child, with parents expressing deep empathy for the heartbreak of watching their children suffer through sleepless nights.

It is best administered under a DAN Dr. and is an alternate approach. The changes you will find are well worth the effort.

I tried all the medicine but none of them helped and I hated how she was such a zombie on them!So I decided to go with another approach, Healthier Diet and LOTS OF ACTIVITIES, Get your child into anything and everything that your local agencies have to offer, what may seem like a lot to you could be just enough for him! He will tell you when he has had enough but usually when you find the right activies, he will wear himself out and come home to sleep like a baby at night! :) I hope this helps!

My son is 20 and he is prescribed both Ambien and Remeron. Absent these I get great help from Healthy Sense Relax and Sleep, Puritans Pride Super Slumber and adding 1Mg Melatonin Total 6Mg Before Bed Calm Tabs and St Johns Wort help to set the mood.

What has worked for us is melatonin. We started with 500 mcg (.5 mg). Dr. was surprised it even made a difference at such a low dose we are now up to 1 mg . We buy them from trader Joe's and they are chewable and taste like mint. My son asks for them every night after dinner. He is still an early riser but I no longer have to lay down with him for hours to get him to sleep. Research this topic as there is a lot of studies showing that children on the spectrum do not produce this as well as neuro-typicals and it is a huge precursor to sleep. Melatonin is a sleep communicator to the brain. It is produced when it begins getting dark outside... telling our brains to go to sleep. Nice thing is that it is inexpensive, natural and can be found in other chewable flavors too like raspberry and strawberry ( from Natrol) also can be found in sublingual (liquid form). As always talk to a Dr. about the right dose for your child and to ensure it is safe with any other medication being used.
