How Can I Help?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

I am trying to find where I can offer my help to be available to parents who just learned their child may have Autism and or delays and should call Early Intervention. I DO NOT work for them. I am a mom of two twin boys both on the spectrum that saw so much incredible progress with the help of EI. I know many parents who never made the call and did not benefit in the services in time. I would love to share my story with them and help in the process of getting all on board and how YOU are the… read more

I am a parent mentor for the TACA (Talk About Curing Autism)organization. If you would like to help others, I would recommend contacting them. They will provide mentor training and set you up with mentees in your area. They are a wonderful organization that offers information and support.

Sorry you are having a rough time! Well perhaps you too can go through these various ideas to be matched to a parent mentor, yourself. Actually, I just put in " autism parent mentors" in my IE browser and found new ideas specific to my state, but not really. The providers that DX the child initially sometimes have a parent mentoring program, inhouse (likely, so that when they give the DX, they can then set you up w/ a parent mentor about the same time). And you might also try your local or state Autism Society / The Arc for help.

BTW, here the Parent to Parent DB for USA so you can find if your state has a Parent Matching Program:

Try your local special education cooperative if one exists. They have parent advocates sometimes, plus they offer early intervention services/schooling once a child turns 3 and if they qualify. At least they do in my neck of the woods.

I would let your local EI provider (or Part C of IDEA provider, if separate from above) know that you are avail to assist new parents along their paths.

Or likewise, if NJ has an active Parent 2 Parent organization, you could ask to be a parent mentor for their Parent Matching Program or join their or other state or local disability listservs (and be avail to answer questions and be otherwise supportive as the need arises).
