Many states have Medicaid waivers and sometimes they will pay for ABA. Mine does. First you need to apply.... then many states have waitlists so even though your son qualifies, you have to wait until he's drawn. Start by calling the state disability department.

I've looked into appealing my insurance. Unfortunately it's federal government so, I'm at a loss. Just make sure you have your professional assessments/treatments well documented. Here's a helpful document that will help you do battle. I just hope the link works!

There's also a new Medicaid "opt in" program where you buy a premium for your special needs child to be covered by Medicaid if they've aged out of the autism waiver wait list or you make too much to qualify for SSI or Medicaid. Medicaid would count as your child's secondary insurance and cover the gaps private insurance doesn't. We're doing the opt in for both our ASD girls.

Some states have passed autism-pariety legislation which means insurance companies have to cover Autism treatment. First find out if your state is one that has passed those laws. Then find out if your insurance has to follow those laws. I'm a federal employee so although my state passed the law, my insurance is not governed by that law.
