HOW YOUNG IS TO YOUNG TO DIAGNOSE ASD
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

MY 22 MONTH OLD BABBLES BUT DOESN'T SAY ANYTHING DISCERNABLE98% OF THE TIME, DOESN'T POINT TO GET WHAT HE WANTS, WAS BEHIND ON ROLLING OVER, SITTING UP AS WELL AS WALKING. HE ACTS AS IF HE DOESN'T HEAR YOU BUT THEN HE DOES RESPOND ON OTHER OCCASIONS. WHILE THE STANDARD EYE CONTACT, SOMEWHAT SOCIAL (HE IS HOME WITH NO OTHER CHILDREN) THE DR'S DON'T SEE IT AS ASD BUT I ALSO HAVE NO ANSWERS ON HIS COMMUNICATION SKILLS. HOW YOUNG IS TO YOUNG WHEN THINGS ARE LIKE THIS. I AM ABOUT TO PULL MY HAIR OUT

I would get a second opinion. My oldest was about 3 when I notice a change. He was walking, talking at age appropriate but a month before his 3rd birthday he completely stopped talking and withdrew from everyone (which probably makes sense why I couldn't connect with him as an infant). Same thing, he didn't respond to his name but could hear the softest noise in the room. I didn't know what autism was until he started Kinder and the school shrink diagnosed him as high funtion autism. I felt guilty about it like it was my fault. But right away the school jumped on getting his speach therapy and OT. Now his 13 and his teacher is awesome. She has helped a lot with his behavior and understanding.

my daughter showed signs something was wrong within a few weeks of birth. there is no age limit in when they should be diagnosed. the sooner the better. 23 years ago they knew nothing about autism. now they can do so much more. my daughter done everything on the autism chart. ok,first she would not breastfeed, then would not keep her drinks down, she would not sleep for almost two days sometimes, she would not look at you, acted like she did not hear you. would not let you touch her, hated loud noises, stimming, seizures,no sounds but babbles, hated blankets, shoes and socks, loved the vaccuum, followed the sunlight, did circles on the floor, did circles with her hands, not potty trained, would not sit up but rolled and the list goes on. nobody understood what to do for her.now i have a lovable, attentive girl that still don't talk but tries with more sounds and pulls to let me know she wants something. she gets really exited when i figure out what she wants. she eats everything you give her and more. she tries to walk and loves music in her ears. loves to take a long bath go for car rides. she doesn't do everything but sure has shown the doctors how a girl can change from very severe to somebody so much different. i have no answers. just being attentive and have the strength to keep going. no medications has changed her just time and patience. try A.I.T. training, pictures on cards, check tags on clothes, color therapy helps too. music to calm them down like the oldies. they like repetitive things like a particular movie, music or any one thing they enjoy. give them a bowl of water to play in or sand, EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT BUT WE CAN HELP EACH OTHER THROUGH SOMETHING SO HARD AND MYSTERIOUS. GOOD LUCK

My son was 20 months when diagnosed. See a developmental pediatrician they know what to look for and can show you where to get started. My son is 26 months now and I've already seen major improvements!
