Does Anyone Have Any Suggestions For Getting My Son To Take Regular Showers?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

He is almost 16 and has resisted bathing for years now. To get him to bathe takes an act of Congress, with lots of verbal aggression and acting out. I want him to break this habit and get into a regular routine of bathing on his own at least once a week.

My son is 6 and loves bath time. But it MUST follow routine or it all goes south. He bathes directly after his sister is done in the shower, has her pjs on and I brush her hair. As soon as her hair is in a braid he b lines for the tub. Do you have a routine before shower time? We have introduced showers to our son. We let him fill up the tub with his bath water then turn on the shower. We had to get one of those removable shower heads w the hose. That way the water doesn't come flying at him from so high up. He is quite tolerant of this and is almost ready to lose the bath water n go for a straight shower. We just have tried to do baby steps. Hope this help. Good luck :)

Do you know what it is about bathing that bothers him? Knowing that might help you figure out how to motivate him.

My son hated taking showers but was okay with a bath. The problem was he would be in the bath for a long time. At 13-14 he still considered bath time to be play time as it was when he was much younger. We wanted him to start taking a shower for the time factor. We finally compromised by having him still mostly take baths but he is limited on the amount of time he gets spend in there.

Get him a girlfriend to get motivated! LOL...just trying to keep it light. My 24 yr old daughter often goes 3 days without a shower also. Wish she'd get a boyfriend to motivate her to taking better care of her hygiene. She will wash her face in the shower (I think) but never washes it otherwise. She wears some make-up if she goes out, but generally picks it off by PM. Never brushes her teeth in the AM, but will do so PM. sigh

My son would sometimes act like he took a shower & didn't. The soap would not be wet or his towel! We would tell him to take a shower--or I will take hime one! That would freak him out & he would take a shower. My son is 16 & he loves Axe too. I bought him the shower gels & deodarant. As for you son being cold when he gets out, why doesn't he just put his towel over the shower door & when he is done showering towel off in the shower & avoid going out of the shower into the cold being wet?
