My son (a.k.a. Wild Thing) is an 8th grader with hfASD. There is another boy (a.k.a. Shy One) in his grade (but they don't have classes together) who is also hfASD. We just discovered that Shy One lives on our street! They have similar abilities and interests. Another thing you could do is see if the school could start a social group that both can belong to. We do these frequently at our school, we disguise it as a fun lunch bunch but the true purpose is to group kids with like interest. We have found several of our connections have ventured outside of the school setting.
Step One is accomplished! Wild Thing and I went down and introduced ourselves to Foster Mama and see Shy One outside of school. We exchanged phone numbers and I invited them to come to church with us and for Shy One to come to youth group. We didn't stay long, but Shy One and Wild Thing talked in the Living Room while Foster Mama and I talked in the kitchen. I think if we take baby steps things will be just fine. :)
