My son is 11 (Aspergers) and a gifted student, grades come easy w/ little effort and usually means NO homework or need to study. My husband and I have a rule that online computer games are from 5-7 on school nights. He is alloted more freedom on the weekend. My son is always seems to be playing more adult type "shooter" online games. When he is not playing those games he watching videos on how to beat them or mod them. Our biggest battle is finding a balance. He reads and will play outside… read more
My son is 10 and is also twice exceptional (Aspergers and gifted). We are a lot stricter on video games (we only allow 30 minutes a day during the week). He would stay online all day if allowed. We have gotten him involved in Cub Scouts to keep him busy. He works on badges and pins instead of getting on the computer. Also he must play outside at least an hour a day. He is an advid runner (as in the sport not running away) and runs at least 3 miles a day. He wants to run a 10K but I told him he must prove to me he is able to do it before I will allow him to sign up for one. So my best advice is to find something he loves just as much as the computer and get him involved in that.
thanks for your response, I do not worry about him playing games like Black Ops, I just would also like to see him play other types. I have tried to explain to him about having a balance in the type of games and online activity that he does. I want him to understand that too much of anything can be bad for him. This is the biggest challenge of course w/ an Apie... He is also extremely interested in Guns. His dad is an Iraqi Vet, and police officer, and avid hunter. HE has no desire to shoot weapons b/c they are too loud, but he loves to tell us all about the different types and loves pretend or air soft guns. I suppose in todays society I worry that people will form preconcieved ideas about his interests b/c of all the recent news articles. Of course he is the same child who was reading ww2 books and books on deadliest dieseases and animals in 1st grade.
I have a seven year old who is Aspergers and love video games. Are you worried he will not complete his chores or just being online? I do not allow my school to play violent games. If he is on vacation I do not see on issue with playing the games you may want to change it from violent games to games with the same hand eye coordination that is his favorite hobby. I would also make a chore sheet with other things he has to do for the day and reward him based on he accomplishing the tasks for the day.
Thanks for your response, I love hearing how others handle the same situations we encounter.
