How To Easy Anxiety During Church
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My family and I have tried to attend church and my son gets very antsy. And other ppl there just stare when he starts to mess with stuff.I'll hand him phone because that's the only way to calm him. So my question is how can I help him with that.

Figure out if your son likes any part of the service. For my son, it was the music. So we would come for that and then leave. After he was doing that well, I started slowly adding time until he could finally handle the whole thing. It took a few years to build up to that.

Find a church with a kids program that runs at the same time as the main service? The church I grew up in did that. Might take a few times of you staying there with him to get him used to it, but eventually he might start to love it.

We took coloring books and quiet snacks (raisins etc) until my kids were 6. It got them used to going and how long mass would last. I eliminated the snack, then a couple of months later eliminated the coloring books. They still get antsy, but it did help. We also give allowance weekly and give it out right after church. They know if they are not good in church then no allowance or electronics for the rest of the day.

We had the same problem too :/ In the state we moved from before the people were great, most. And they loved both our daughters. They did have a program for kids that started after praise and worship. It wasn't until right before we moved from there that we started to really think something was up though. Our daughter loves music but I can't tell you how many times we had to leave service because she just got to overwhelmed or just didn't go because we knew the morning had started off bad. It stated to be we couldn't leave her in the nursery alone. Then we moved to the state we are in now and she wouldn't let us leave her. They kind of were trying to push us to just leave her and at the time I wasnt ready to tell people she may may have autism or asd because we were really just learning about it ourselves. Needless to say we haven't been back there. :(

Hi, there are severel churches that have children programs.. if you are lucky you can find one that is for special needs children. They will work with your child one on one..
