That's one of those things that people just don't get if they don't have a child who does it. We've just given up on caring what others think if it. I usually say something like this "I know that it's hard to understand autistic behaviors. You'll just have to believe me that me that we're doing the best we can."
As long as your child is happy and is growing normally you don't need to explain to anyone what you are doing. As any parent of child with ASD knows they can be very picky eaters. My son knows the difference between brands as well. If I buy a chicken nugget that is on sale, he won't eat it because he knows that its different either by taste, smell or color. The bottom line is you have to make sure he is eating and it certainly sounds like he is. It doesn't matter if you have to make a certain lunch or type of food. Every where we go I have to pack my son's lunch/snacks/dinner or he won't eat. People just don't understand the struggles that we go through. It's so much easier to give them what they like and have them be happy then to fight and stuggle and they won't eat what you are trying to force on them and then it results in a meltdown. The other way it keeps everyone happy! You sound like a great mom, keep doing what you are doing and don't worry about what others are doing/saying.
my son is the same, partly i think due to sensory issues with some food, but I do try to get him to try new things. I stopped sending him to school with lunch and that has helped him "open up" to new foods. I don't think you need to explain yourself to anyone. It's you child and you keep doing what you know BEST! :) hugs
I am with you on this one. My son is 15 and has been a VERY picky eater since he was about 5. Im talking mac and cheese, corn, chicken noodle soup, ramen, brocolli, and very little meat only chicken. Thats it. People used to ask me the same and tell me I was catering to him but I needed him to eat! I have gradually gotten him to eat other things but he still refuses any kind of beans or rice. I think its the texture maybe associated with SPD. Either way, you are the mom and you are doing what you can the best you can. Kudos to you. It will get better. Get some gummy vitamins or they have vitamins just for the age group your child is in. Mine takes vitamins made for teen boys. :)
awesome!! I love that, so glad to hear :)my son LOVES shrimp and fish too.
