My son is a 4 years old autistc child, for the past two years he has been experiencing this requent diarrhea, its on and off during the morning there are days that he can have 4 to 5 episodes, ans then in the afternoon of that same day his poop will be hard (normal). I took him to his pediatrician and he told me that this is normal in kids with autism. Im not happy with this answer. Can someone please tell me if you can relate with this and what do you suggest to help. Thank you
While GI issues are common in ASD that doesn't mean they shouldn't be treated. Make sure GI doc does some testing and doesn't brush this off as part of autism. Loose stools is typically associated with clostridia and dysbiosis in the gut. Stool test from doctor can confirm that. If so, can be treated with flagyl or vancomycin. Other approach would be diet and probiotics.
I would make an appointment with a pediatric gastroenterologist.
I bought it from the health food store and it's a powder (strawberry flavored) made specifically for children. We stir a 1/2 tsp into his pureed pears and he has never even noticed. It has worked really well and I am very happy. You could also stir into yogurt if he likes that or pudding.
Is it just a very small amount?
My son had small accidents of diarrhea many times a day then a normal stool. We took him to a gastro. I was told he was constipated and the liquid would go around the stool causing the accidents. We put him on miralax - a powder stool softener. He took it in cold juice everyday and the problem went away. Now I give it to him only when he has problems going. We also give him a probiotic which seems to help overall GI. The limited diet is my sons main problem - too much starch.
