My son turns 5 next month and I want to talk to his dr about possible medication for his ADHD. He currently isn't on any meds for anything. But I think it might help him focus. He's been having a little bit of a hard time staying on task at school. Plus I think it might be really benificial for kindergarten this Fall. He is pretty high functioning and verbal, just needs help with some speech issues and social skills. Any suggestions on good medications or bad ones? What are some… read more

Look into Vayarin. It is a prescription med which is basically omega3 bonded with PS that is prescribed for ADHD. It is new so doc may not have heard of it so need to look it up. That is something that the body needs anyway and has shown efficacy in double blind studies. I would stay away from stimulants at this age. Also if considering natural supplements rather than meds, there is also another one called Attend by Vaxa which is OTC which may work for some including adults.

Brightspark and Focus Formula from Native Remedies might help.

ADHD meds make a huge difference for my son. It seems to help him handle anxiety much better. AND he needs much less redirection on the meds so it helps his self esteem not hearing he is doing something wrong so much. He is also more receptive to listening to "training". He takes concerta.

I am not anti-pharmaceutical, but I strongly believe that they should be a last resort after nutritional therapies have been tried without success. DD's biomed dr. wrote a whole book about natural treatments for ADHD: http://www.amazon.com/ADHD-Without-Drugs-Integr...
