PRT (Pivotal Response Treatment) Vs ABA
We just got our insurance approved for 20 hrs/ week of ABA at home or in an unrestrictive environment. Also he is taking about 10 hours/week of ABA at school. Stanford University is doing a research study based on PRT in which they said they would give 10 hours of PRT for 12 weeks and 5 hours of PRT for another 12 weeks total of 24 weeks. Also Parent training of about 1 hour a week. We might qualify for it.
But the problem is we can't take more than 10 hours of ABA if we need to participate… read more
Since you are already doing ABA and would continue to do so (at least 10hrs/week), I would consider PRT to augment other skills areas that ABA doesn't do a good job focusing on - and what is important about PRT is really the parent training, so the therapy techniques can be continued during off time which is more important long-term. I am assuming you can do 20 hrs ABA once PRT is over. We did a bit of pivotal response ourselves which was effective, and then switched over to Verbal Behavior/ABA. Our son was highly verbal and VB/ABA worked better for us due to hyperactivity/escape behavior. Now that he is calmer with longer attention span, I believe other therapies such as Floortime, RDI, and PRT are more effective. We still do maintenance ABA to focus on specific weaknesses e.g. fine motor skills.
I wouldn't let your insurance ABA services go, while you still can do both , ABA therapies is going to be one if your primary therapies for a long time, we do get it trough our health insurance 20 hours, and they will provide it as long as we need it , so I wouldn't loose that great benefit, good luck!!!
