Does Anyone Know What The Side Effects Of Prozac Are Given To A 13 Year Old Boy With PDD?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 13 year old has PDD,nos. He was put on Prozac (generic) about 2 months ago. He has been taking it for anxiety which has cleared up. In the meantime he is regressing in other ways. He fights everything we ask, becoming more disrespectful, more childish, very hyper especially at night. He seems to be getting worst and worst where we don't even want to be with him because we don't know what to expect. Has anyone else experienced this with their child? Help! I honestly don't know what to do… read more

Thank you..I am calling the doctor Monday. Once again he was exhibiting very unusual behavior tonight. I had to be stern and have him stop moving around. All he hears is Luke stop or Luke no..etc...it was just a few months ago that we were smiling, laughing, and correcting, and talking. That no longer occurs.
To know someone else has actually experienced those side effects encourages me in hoping that the medication is a part of the cause of change.

Prozac can have the side effects you are talking about.I experienced similar negative side effects from prozac when I was about 14.Overall,Prozac generally has a low risk for bad side effects, but everyone is different. Here is a complete list of possible side effects Prozac has. Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing (you don't need to worry about allergic reactions that would have happened by now)
Anxiety(seems odd because it is used to treat anxiety, but it can also cause anxiety in some people,it caused my anxiety to worsen when I took it) restlessness, fever, sweating, muscle spasms, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, seeing or hearing things that are not there,Blistering, peeling, or red skin rash,Confusion, weakness, and muscle twitching
Fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeat, dizziness
***Feeling more excited or energetic than usual***
Seizures,Trouble breathing,Trouble sleeping, unusual dreams,Unusual behavior, thoughts of hurting yourself or others,Unusual bleeding or bruising (it said on the site that those were the more serious side effects and to call a doctor as soon as you can) The less serious side effects are as follows: Blurry vision,Changes in appetite with weight gain or loss,Nausea, diarrhea,Sexual problems,Sleepiness. If the less serious side effects are experienced, talk with your doctor at next visit. I found this information at this link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMHT00...

I was really hoping that someone would say yes they have seen Prozac effect their child in an adverse way. His whole spirit has changed to a very unhappy disrespectful child who doesn't care anymore.
There are several dynamics that play into his change....13 yrs with raging hormones, been at a private school that just didn't understand him (he is no longer there..lost all self esteem ), on 10/13 one of his grandmothers died suddenly and two days prior his other grandmother went into the ICU, and another major component...his father has had Lyme disease for 11 years and this disease leaves the father in bed most of the time and not able to do much with our son. And I have recently taken a job which leaves my son alone with his father in bed much of the time. No routine.

I do not have a good doctor to take him to. I live off the Georgia coast and will go wherever I need to to get the right help. I honestly think the Prozac maybe adding to his hyperactivity ,new sleep issues, and is going backwards (he all of a sudden is walking on my couches, licking the sugar off the counter, etc.). He battles us all day long now much more than he ever has.

I have to keep hope in the forefront of my thoughts but it is getting harder and harder. As his older brother said " I just want Luke back!"

Thank you for taking the time to respond

Just as an FYI I am not a doctor but I can tell you it is important to be consist and with your med times because lets say you gave your child a dose before bed and then did it again early in the day you are essentially overdosing at that point and there is to much in their system. Then on the other hand if they are spread to far apart you are not getting the best effect.

We also use Trazadone and it works well but that is definitely a night med and helps you sleep especially at high doses. It has very little by the way of side effects as well.

The other thing I will add is that just the meds alone will not work you need therapies like ABA as well. Most meds take the edge off and give the child better concentration, and coping skills but they do not fix the underlying problem.

I have been giving him the Prozac at all times of day just depending when I could remember.
Thank you I will definitely make sure he takes medication in the AM.
